Bolton College is a further education college located in Bolton, Greater Manchester, England. The college is primarily based in Bolton, but operates a number of Community Learning Centres in the surrounding area
The 627 sq m sports hall which is situated on the 2nd floor of the building had been damaged by water ingression and was deemed unsafe to use.
Repairing the leaks and replacing the damaged floor was essential
The choice of flooring was driven by performance and cost
The new surface needed to be multi-purpose to suit the college’s extensive sports curriculum. The hallwould also host exams and school functions, so must withstand varied usage and heavy traffic.
We are pleased to say that the college entrusted our team here at Recreational Coatings to replace the existing floor with a new Conica Area Elastic high-performance sports floor.
The college decided to change the lighting in the hall prior to our installation
We knew that the removal of the old sports floor and the delivery of the new sports floor was going to be a difficult operation due to the location of the hall in the building and the weight and volume of both floors. Access was very restricted and we were limited to the use of a small goods lift and 2 flights of stairs.
Also, we were required to work in a live situation with both students and staff using the building whilst the work was being carried out.
When our team uplifted the floor, we revealed a very sound flat sub floor
The existing games post fixings were to remain in place
A sheet of DPM membrane was installed over the whole area
We then installed the Conipur AE Eco EN14904 compliant sports floor which was finished in a stunning RAL 5015 Blue colour.
The floor was completed with line markings and 4 new bushing covers were installed for Netball and Volleyball
New Skirtings were fitted to the perimeter of the hall
New heavy-duty door thresholds were installed in all doorways
Despite the unexpected challenges we faced, and the restrictions brought about by Covid 19 the project was completed on time and on budget.
It was unclear when the college would be able to accommodate students however, we needed to ensure the hall was ready for their return.
The new floor will be covered by a manufacturer’s warranty and our Recreational Coatings installation guarantee.

We recently had a new sports hall installed over the summer break, the service from the initial enquiry to completion of the works was very professional. The flexibility of the team to fit the works in around other essential maintenance was co-operative and supportive to the needs of the College.
The work was carried out in stages to minimise disruption and the areas were left clean and tidy at all stages. The team leader reported at all stages what was going to happen when and how and everything run very smoothly.
